Surface Ablation

The oldest technique is Surface Ablation. In this surgery, only a small amount of the tissue covering the cornea (epithelium) is removed.

prk_lasekThis can be done mechanically (PRK), after using an alcoholic solution (LASEK), or after cutting away the tissue. Afterwards the surgery itself is performed with the EXCIMER laser.  In about four days the epithelium will grow back.

After the surgery a bandage contact lens is placed to combat the pain.

This method is mostly used to correct greater refractive errors, especially if the pupil is large and the cornea a little thinner.
